Original Glazed

2025

I love shiny things, I love chunky things, I love colourful things, and I love donuts. So, with that, I created ‘Original Glazed’ - a tabletop collection designed to brighten your everyday.

Original Glazed is an eight-piece tableware collection which aims to sit comfortably into the everyday, effectively carrying out intended function, whilst simultaneously 45blending functionality with creativity, to elevate typically ordinary objects and bring fun into our kitchens and living spaces. It focuses on finding the balance between practicality and playfulness, working with traditional industrial ceramic techniques such as the jigger jolly, lathe, whirler, 3D printing, and slip casting, and pushing them to contemporary outcomes.

This is my degree project from BA Ceramic Design at Central Saint Martins, where I underwent a design investigation into multifunctional tableware, and it’s link with emotional durability. Defined simply, emotional durability is designing products that people want to keep, so, where physical durability is resisting wear and damage, emotional durability is resisting our natural tendency to want the next new thing. Multifunctionality can most simply be defined as something that has several different uses, and in the context of my ceramic practice, I am interested in multifunctionality to challenge my design and technical skills, but also, when executed well, I hope it can speak to sustainability through reducing consumption of multiple items, because one item (less firings, less transport, less packaging, etc) is bought instead of multiple. I have been playing with the push and pull between the two throughout my final year, with the aim to produce pieces with the intrigue and fun I get from multifunctionality, paired with the sensibility and longevity of emotional durability. You’ll find these details in many items in the collection - whether it’s flippable, stackable, or an egg cup that will happily display your favourite candlestick.
